The eighteenth edition of this successful work, complete in two volumes. Dated from the same edition copy on Copac. Uniformly bound in half crushed morocco bindings. Ex-libris from K. W. C. Down's library. Lacking the title page and contents list to vol. I, half titles present as well as engraved title page and contents list to vol. II. Edited, with a memoir, by R. H. D. Barham. With seventeen full page plates and other in text illustrations by G. Cruikshank, J. Leech and J. Tenniel.
A popular collection of myths, legends, ghost stories, and poetry by English clergyman Richard Harris Barham, published under pen-pane Thomas Ingoldsby of Tappington Manor. First serialised in 1837, they became an immediate success and remained popular through the nineteenth century.
Featuring the poem 'The Jackdaw of Rheims,' as well as early transcriptions of the song 'A Flanklyn's Dogge.'
CONDITION
in uniform half crushed morocco bindings over marbled boards and endpapers, with five raised bands and gilt to the top edge. Original cloth spine pasted to the rear of the volume. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, minor rubbing. With K. W. C. Down's bookplate to the front free endpaper of both volumes, James Dearden bookplate to the front pastedown of vol. I only. Poem in pencil by R H B inscribed by a previous owner to the verso front free endpaper of vol. I dedicated to the author's son, titled 'Letter to His Son'. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with seventeen full page plates and other in text illustrations by G. Cruikshank, J. Leech and J. Tenniel. Lacking the title page and contents list to vol. I, half titles present as well as engraved title page and contents list to vol. II
